Major economic activities are resource extractive such as farming, forestry and fishing. These are followed by business and professional practice. Fishponds are mostly located in Bgys. Caradio-an and Talaban. The major fishery products include fish, talaba, greenshell, tahong and others.

The City’s slaughterhouse is located in Bgy. III Poblacion. Plans are being made to construct a Class AAA slaughterhouse, stockyard and auction market.

The Postal Bank is operating in the City since 2006. There are also about 10 lending institutions. Other major business establishments include the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, San Miguel Corporation Sales Office, pawnshops, hardwares, etc. Major industrial establishments, on the other hand, comprise trucking services, machine shops, rice mills, Himamaylan Ice Plant & Aguisan Ice Plant, as well as small-scale business entrepreneurs engaged in meat processing, chorizo making, ice candy, ice buko and hollow blocks manufacturing.

The City has three public markets located, Bgy. Aguisan and Bgy. Su-ay. There are also satellite
markets in Bgy. Carabalan, Buenavista and Mahalang. A New Himamaylan Public market is
located at So. Nasug-ong, Barangay Caradio-an.
